(June 22, 2023) \u2013 Hundreds of Indian Americans and their allies gathered at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., to stage a demonstration against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s assault on democratic values and ongoing human rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protest, attended by individuals from diverse religious backgrounds such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, and tribal communities, coincided with Modi\u2019s upcoming address to a joint session of Congress and a state dinner at The White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by the Coalition for Reclaiming Indian Democracy, a collective of civil rights and interfaith organizations, the protest aimed to raise awareness about the deteriorating state of democracy in India, persecution of religious minorities, particularly Muslims and Christians, crackdown on press and civil society. Prominent activists and victims of human rights abuses under the Modi regime addressed the gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemocracy as we know it has ceased to exist in India,\u201d said Dr. Aakashi Bhatt, daughter of imprisoned Indian whistleblower Sanjiv Bhatt, who was given a lifetime prison sentence as a retribution for providing eyewitness testimony on Modi\u2019s role in the 2002 Gujarat pogrom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy father sacrificed twenty-one years of his life to relentlessly fight for the thousands who are incarcerated and victimized by [the Modi] regime,\u201d Bhatt said. \u201cAs a society, we cannot let the sacrifices of our heroes go to waste. We need to raise a unified voice against Modi.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thefox.withemes.com\/times4\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2019\/09\/brooke-cagle-W8IMcfVCA_o-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-610\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eum graeci regione posidonium id, eos ea natum laudem fabellas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJournalists are getting attacked and jailed in India\u2026 [but] I also firmly believe that hatred has an expiry date,\u201d said Niranjan Takle, a senior Indian journalist who has faced extensive harassment for his work. \u201cI will continue to stand up for democracy and secularism in India, and I call on leaders in the United States to join me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lien Gangte, senior Leader of the North American Manipur Tribal Association (NAMTA), spoke about recent ethnic violence in India\u2019s Manipur state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrime Minister Modi Narendra Modi has been silent\u2026 This is ethnic cleansing, pure and simple,\u201d he said. \u201cWe call on every concerned individual to exercise their democratic rights by urging their elected representatives in the US [to] provide humanitarian aid and security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndia is not the world\u2019s largest democracy. India is the world\u2019s largest authoritarian regime,\u201d said Arjun Sethi, a human rights lawyer and adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center. \u201cA democracy doesn\u2019t terrorize minority communities [or] wage war on the press\u2026 Modi was banned from this country for more than ten years. He should be banned again. Errem mandamus torquatos cu vim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is unacceptable that the Biden administration gives Modi this platform to act like a democratic leader, because in doing so, Biden is complicit in whitewashing the blood on Modi\u2019s hands,\u201d Husnaa Vhora, Advocacy Associate with the Indian American Muslim Council. \u201cEven worse, he\u2019s actively celebrating a man who has stayed silent while his supporters\u2026 called for minorities to be eradicated from India.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a progressive Hindu American\u2026 it is my ethical, political, and religious duty to stand up against the age-old atrocity of caste and the hatred and violence of Hindu nationalism, the evil twin ideologies that fuel Modi and the BJP as they steer India on a very dark path towards becoming a Hindu supremacist theocracy,\u201d said Sunita Vishwanath, Executive Director of the advocacy group Hindus for Human Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added, \u201cShame on the Biden administration for claiming to care about democracy and human rights, but shamelessly rolling out the red carpet for the Hindu supremacist leader who is dividing India along fault lines of hate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden, do not underestimate the vicious power of Prime Minister Modi\u2026 who is hand in glove with violence,\u201d said Reverend Sarah Anderson, pastor at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. \u201cStop killing of pastors and their congregations. Stop burning churches in Manipur.
